Social Responsibility is our mandate

Supporting community isn’t a marketing tool at the Co-op: it is one of the seven International Principles upon which co-operatives are built. At the Co-op, our social responsibility is as important as providing services for our members. You can see some of the things we do to support the community on our Co-op News pages.

Building our community

Mid Island Co-op supports a broad range of organizations, with priority given to those projects or organizations that build long-term capacity in our community. And our responsibility goes beyond our local community – we believe we have a responsibility to do business in a way that is environmentally sound and that encourages equality beyond our borders.

Education Awards

Each year Mid Island Co-op is proud to provide 22 bursaries and scholarships to post-secondary students. The majority of these awards are provided through local school districts and Vancouver Island University who select the recipients. Three awards are provided directly by the Co-op’s Member Relations Committee. Applications are now being accepted for these three additional awards, valued at $1,000 each.
The Member Relations Committee will select the three recipients based on the answers provided in this application, which shall be evaluated on the basis of overall merit and need demonstrated. To qualify for an award, an applicant must be currently attending a post-secondary institution or accepted for the following academic year/term, and must be taking a credit program (this could be an area including academic, business, trades, vocational or adult education). Applicants must be a Mid Island Co-op Member, or a relative of a Mid Island Co-op member.
Mid Island Co-op would like to thank all of those who applied in 2018 and extend a warm congratulations to this year’s award recipients: Jennifer Coburn, Alex Kurulak and Fiona Sowden. We wish you all success with your future studies.
For more information please contact your local secondary school and the Vancouver Island University Foundation for applications. Mid Island Co-op’s 2019 Education Award application will be available on-line mid March 2019.
